Carna Cill Chiaráin (Galway) Water Treatment Plant Energy Upgrade

Services Involved
Energy in Local Authorities,

Energy UpgradeTipperary Energy Agency carried out a detailed energy audit on Carna Cill Chiaráin Water Treatment Plant in October 2012 on behalf of Galway County Council. The energy audit report identified significant opportunities to reduce energy consumption at the plant in two key areas, auto production of electricity using wind power and an opportunity to retrofit the existing raw water pump with a more efficient model.

Clearly committed to energy efficiency, Galway County Council implemented the following energy saving projects which were identified in the energy audit report and will reduce energy consumption at the plant by 35% saving 74,640 kWh on an annual basis. Both projects were approved for part funding under the SEAI Better Energy for Communities programme. The projects were procured and project managed by the Tipperary Energy Agency on behalf of Galway County Council.

Project 1: 20 kW Wind Turbine
The 20 kW C&F Green Energy Ltd. wind turbine installation will reduce overall energy costs at the plant by 25%, saving 52,560 kWh annually. The project has a simple payback of less than 6-years on Galway Co. Co. capital expenditure, taking into account grant funding of 50% from the SEAI.

Project 2: Raw Water Pump Retrofit
The pump retrofit will reduce overall energy costs at the plant by 10% and reduce raw water energy costs by 24%, saving 22,080 kWh. The overall system efficiency has increased from 36% to 52%. The project has a simple payback of 1.9-years on Galway Co.Co. capital expenditure, taking into account grant funding of 35% from the SEAI.
