Become a shareholder in Community Power and own part of a solar farm in Tipperary

Community Power are now inviting members of the public to become a shareholder in Community Solar Tipperary and own part of a 4-5MW solar farm in Tipperary.

What is Community Power?

Community Power is Ireland’s first community owned electricity supplier.  They are a partnership of community energy groups working for a sustainable energy future for Ireland.  Community Power grew out of Ireland’s first community owned wind farm, Templederry Wind Farm in Co Tipperary, and are now working with Irish communities to develop more renewable energy projects owned by people!

Speaking about Community Power Paul Kenny, Tipperary Energy Agency CEO said, “Energy democracy is becoming a reality.  Citizens and communities will have the opportunity to own the energy infrastructure that supplies their power. This effectively allows people to be energy ‘prosumers’, not only consuming energy, but actively participating in the energy market”.

3 New Solar Farms

Community Power are planning to grow their renewable generation capacity by building up to three solar farms in Galway, Mayo and Tipperary.  It is their intention to take part in the first auction of the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) which is due to be held in July 2020.  This scheme will provide support for the sale of solar electricity to the Irish market for the first time. Ownership of these solar farms will be open to the communities and citizens of Ireland, with priority to those living nearby, to allow all to share in the returns and benefits of renewable energy.  Each solar farm will be developed as individual legal entities, and all will be built on co-operative principles based on voluntary and open participation, will be autonomous and will be effectively controlled by shareholders or members that are located nearby.
