JK Brackens GAA Club
Energy Efficient GAA Clubs
JK Brackens is a dual Senior Hurling & Gaelic Football club in the parish of Templemore, Clonmore & Killea in Co. Tipperary catering for all ages from U6.
There was no central heating in the clubhouse so the club were very limited to what they could use it for.
“We couldn’t hold meetings there in the Winter months and it was not suitable for holding functions,” said Tony Sheedy, Club Treasurer. “There was also a poor hot water supply for showers after matches.”
Energy Efficient Heating System
The club got in touch with Tipperary Energy Agency who carried out an energy audit, supported by LEADER to determine what energy upgrade works could be carried out. An application was made to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) Better Energy Communities (BEC) scheme to fund 50% of the costs of the works, which was granted. JK Brackens completed all the works recommended by Tipperary Energy Agency.
These works included an air-air heating system, calorifier and heat pump combination, LED lighting system, new Kingspan trapezoidal roof, wall insulation, demand-controlled ventilation, windows, and doors upgrade and floor insulation. The new measures resulted in savings of 7,295kWh per year or €494 per year.
Speaking about the upgrades, Tony said, “It’s been great for the club and widely received by all the members. Having been able to get such work done with the benefit of such a significant grant has been a big cost saving to the club”.
As a result of the upgrades, the club now have the luxury of a warm, bright, and comfortable clubhouse which they can use for various meetings and events going forward.
“Overall, it’s been a great success for us to get everything done in such an efficient manner and with great help from all concerned in Tipperary Energy Agency,” said Tony.
