Tipperary Energy Agency is working with Fuinneamh Oileain Arann Comharchumann Teoranta (Aran Islands Energy Co-op) on investigating the options for a auto-generation wind farm on Inis Mor.
The aim is to make the Aran Islands self-sufficient and remove dependence on fossil fuels. The cost of heating oil on the Island is 22% higher than on the mainland in Galway. The energy co-operative wants to retrofit all houses and buildings on the island, replace fossil fuel burning heating systems with air source heat pumps or other renewable technologies, and produce electricity locally by installing wind turbines on the island to generate the energy required and therefore be carbon neutral.
The wind turbine would play a significant part in producing a large portion of the electrical demand for the island. A feasibility study is currently being carried out.
In addition to this, Tipperary Energy Agency will advise in the community engagement process – it is critical to get the community as whole behind the energy co-ops aims to ensure successful reduction of fossil fuels.
‘Tipperary Energy Agency has been excellent to work with. The team is very professional while also very personable. The agency has taken to heart our aims and objectives and has made them their own. We look forward to a longstanding relationship into the future. Without Tipperary Energy Agency, I don’t think we could achieve our goals’.
